The Veteran’s Memorial in West Pennsboro Township has recently seen the addition of two new plaques commemorating the Pacific and Atlantic theaters of World War II. All enhancements to the memorial are made possible through fundraising, donations, and the sale of memorial bricks. The Recreation Advisory Board remains dedicated to the ongoing development of the Veterans Memorial through various fundraisers.
Honor a veteran by purchasing a memorial brick, which will be displayed along the sidewalks surrounding the memorial. Even if you are not a veteran, you can still support this incredible tribute by buying a brick to be placed within the Friends of the Memorial Area. For details on purchasing a memorial brick, please contact the West Pennsboro Township Office or visit the display case at Pavilion #4, adjacent to the memorial. We appreciate your ongoing support of the Veteran’s Memorial at West Pennsboro Township Park.
Despite uncooperative weather, the memorial dedication ceremony was well-attended by veterans, friends, and family members. The event featured the unveiling of a bust for Medal of Honor recipient SFC Randall D. Shughart, a plaque dedication for LCPL Nicholas B. Morrison at Ball Field #1, speeches by representatives from all military branches, and a performance by the Big Spring High School Band. Noah Smith, winner of the inscription contest, unveiled the Veteran Memorial granite plaque. A recording of the dedication ceremony is available for purchase at the Township Office for $20.
Veteran bricks line the entrance to the Memorial, while bricks supporting the Memorial are placed in the Friends of the Memorial Area. With many bricks already in place, there is still room for more! Bricks can be engraved with the individual’s name, branch of service, rank, dates of service, or date of loss. A 4″x8″ brick costs $75, and an 8″x8″ brick is $150. Township residency or veteran status is not required to purchase a brick.
The West Pennsboro Township Recreation Advisory Council remains committed to the ongoing evolution of the Memorial and plans for future enhancements in the area. Fundraising efforts continue, and contributions are always welcome. For more information, please contact the Township Office at 2150 Newville Road, Carlisle, PA 17015, or call 717-243-8220.
